Kindergarten – 4th Grade: When presenting to the youngest of elementary students, Joseph has requested to set the stage as a general assembly (usually in some type of multi-purpose room) with the students sitting in a circle around Joseph and a table of several different instruments. Since he plays the woodwinds, flutes and saxes are displayed and they include flutes from all around the world. He demonstrates the various flutes and the styles that are appropriate to the instrument’s country origin.

On many occasions, Joseph has performed with a jazz pianist where they demonstrate improvisation. They ask the students to pick a key (by choosing a letter from A – G) and pick a genre of music (by giving them 3 choices to choose from). From their suggestions the musicians make up a song right then and there. It is a very effective exercise for the students to see how music is created.

Middle School Students: As a past teacher, Joseph knows that these grades are difficult in holding their attention. Even though he uses improvisation exercises similar to the younger students, he spends ample time teaching them how to identify their individual talents and weaknesses, not in music, but as a person. He does this so that the students learn how to focus on the right things to practice in order to achieve their goals.

As well, he spends time on goal setting, time management, and learning how to identify individual interests. He talks about his school experiences and what dedication it took in order for him to become fluent with music so that it brought a high level of enjoyment.

Of course, he performs so that the students see his strong passion for music (especially improvised music).

Aside from his playing, that speaks for itself, he approaches his study in a very systematic way, similar to what he learned from Chick Corea and Wynton Marsalis. He has learned how to manage his time and (ultimately as an adult) his money. These are things that students of interest will appreciate and want to hear as they approach college and adulthood, especially from someone who is succesful within their own field or any other field for that matter.

Joseph and his musical teaching partner, composer/pianist, Joel MCray

Philosophy Behind the Webinars- Over the years Joseph has performed many workshops and music clinics sharing his experiences as a recording artist and touring professional with students. However, recently he has accelerated these programs. While fine arts’ budgets are getting slashed, students are being exposed to less and less music losing an appreciation for its place in culture. Therefore, he sees the need for the professional community to step up.

Students need to see how music is created and interpreted by the professional performers and arrangers. Unless students are exposed to how sound media is created, they will have difficulty in the arena of making music. The more on-hand experience young people have with professionals, the more the art form will continue in a positive direction.

Joseph, also, feels that technological stimulus is good, but it is currently saturating our world. Digital technology is so much a part of everyday life (with the constant use of smart phones, HDTV’s and the Internet) that young people are finding it difficult to grasp music’s origin. However, technology can enhance the progression of music’s direction by broadcasting ideas to the masses and that is where the webinars come into play.

Joseph and Joel having some fun in the studio

College tuitions have gotten astronomical and many peforming musicians need the education, not just a degree. This subscription-based webinar program allows a student of any age to gain a lot of knowledge while saving money.

In addition, schools, whether private or public, are losing funding in a dramatic way. This program will give teachers and students an economical way to further their music education. It can even be custom built for individual classrooms and be based on the level of student sophistication at hand.

How the Webinars Work- Webinars is a great tool in providing information to the masses, but the main thing that makes them powerful is the uniqueness of the people and their presentations.

Joel and Joseph share similar capabilities and work very well together - both have taught, both song write, both produce, both arrange, both are their own artist. They bring many similarities to the table and yet they are different enough to challenge each other to set the intensity of their music to a higher level. Also, the approach that they portray while presenting is quite unique.

To maintain their reputations, however, elite colleges have long relied on limiting access—Harvard’s class of 2015 is about 1,700 students, Yale’s is 1,300—and that may be coming to an end. Revolutionaries outside the ivy walls are hammering their way not onto campus but straight into class.

It’s a thrilling collegiate coup. Last fall, a couple of hundred Stanford students registered for Sebastian Thrun’s class on artificial intelligence. He offered the course free online, too, through his new company Udacity, and 160,000 students signed up. For the written assignments and exams, both groups got identical questions—and 210 students got a perfect overall score. They all came from the online group.

So if you bluffed your way into the Ivy League with plumped-up credentials or an essay edited by somebody else, it’s time to start breaking a sweat.

“I like to compare it to film,” Mr. Thrun told me at a coffee shop between Stanford and Mountain View, Calif., where his day job is running Google X, the company’s experimental lab. “Before film there was theater—small casting companies reaching 300 people at a time. Then celluloid was invented, and you could record something and replicate it. A good movie wouldn’t reach 300 but 3,000, and soon 300,000 and soon three million. That changed the economics.”It is education’s time to change now. At the high-school level, interactive study sites are increasingly ingenious: Look at Piazza, Blackboard and Quizlet, founded by a 17-year-old. TED-Ed just launched a channel on You Tube, with three- to 10-minute lessons for kids. YouTube’s EDU Portal has been viewed 22 billion times. Khan Academy, a favorite of Bill Gates, has four million unique users a month and thousands of educational videos, from “Napoleon’s Peninsular Campaigns” to “Python Lists.” If you think that last one is about snakes, please download Khan’s new iPad app immediately. The next big thing, though, is college-level MOOCs and MOOSes: Massive Open Online Courses and Seminars. Harvard already showcases coursework like professor Michael Sandel’s “Justice” lectures online, gratis. Now Georgia Institute of Technology, MIT, Stanford and others are offering advanced online courses, some with accreditation.”The current search for new educational funnels must be reversed,” wrote Austrian philosopher Ivan Illich, in “Deschooling Society.” He called for “educational webs” woven among us all. That was 1971. Today, Web courses don’t just meet but beat their impersonal offline counterparts. Studies show that tutorial-style teaching is more effective than lecturing (as Oxford and Cambridge have known for centuries), even when prerecorded. Mr. Thrun’s online students told him that the course felt more personal.

In this new educational model, the shy and the easily distracted get advantages. You can rewind a video and watch whenever and as many times as you like. Plus, teachers save time with computerized grading and students save money. (U.S. college debt, nearly $1 trillion, is bigger than housing or credit card debt.)

Most important, the system promotes driven and talented students who might otherwise be denied access to higher education: a kid in Afghanistan, a young mother in Scotland, an ignored pupil in Detroit. From Mr. Thrun’s class (translated into 44 languages) Udacity chose 200 students based purely on performance and, a few weeks ago, forwarded their resumes to companies including Amazon, Bank of America and BMW.

There are glitches, of course, including a high online dropout rate, complaints about speed, questions on accreditation and the predictable whining from old-school alumni who have gotten too cozy in their club chairs.

To be truly egalitarian, classes will need to go not just online but mobile. Still, the upshot of it all is clear: more smart people is better. Just watch that ivory tower topple.

Smooth and subtle. Those just might be the most defining words I’d use to describe this latest effort by veteran saxophonist Joseph Vincelli, The Invitation. Honestly, nothing here is super funky (well, there is the nicely grooved finale). Nothing may rattle you to the bone, but, in listening, you ask yourself: Does it always have to be that way? This is solid contemporary jazz played by an artist who has known the music for 17 years, written a book about music, and regularly teaches music classes. I think he might have a feel for the art form. Wouldn’t you?

Here are nine nicely done tracks, including a truly noteworthy and innovative interpretation of “Amazing Grace,” complete with some well-placed scatting by keyboardist/vocalist Joel McCray, a bright addition to this project, overall.

Vincelli’s skills on sax are sharp and tight with telltale jazz runs that add the “moments” to this album that help it to be what it obviously strives to be: Quite noticeable.

Factors that help to break the monotony of any album, in my opinion, are direction, originality, melody, and some great hooks. In addition to the great interpretation of “Amazing Grace,” tracks like “Jewel of the City,” the title track, “Where To Now?,” and “In Season” do that for this CD.

No, not every album breaks the mold or sets the world on fire, although I certainly look for that a lot. Still, there are projects that are just good, solid, professional mood-setters. The Invitation is one such
album. – Ronald Jackson

Over the years Joseph has performed many workshops and music clinics, but recently has accelerated his effort to share his experience as a touring professional with students. As fine arts’ budgets continue to diminish, schools are placing less significance on its purpose in society. Therefore, he sees the need for the professionals to step up to the plate and expose students to more than what they are currently learning.

In addition, Joseph feels that digital technology is so advanced in our current world that, unless students are exposed to the creation of sound media through instruments, they will have difficulty in understanding from where musical sound originates. For this reason, there is a real need for experienced musicians, like himself, to spend more time musically with young people . Therefore, he is making a conscious effort to incorporate visits to schools at all levels by adding it to his tour schedule.

Joseph has also written a profound book on music’s importance in our lives entitled, “The Art of Tone, Understanding Our Love For Music“. Many of his philosophies in his teachings stem from his understanding and research he did during the book’s 15 year project timeline. (You will find some testimonials here on the back of the book. Art of Tone Book Cover)
